GETTING ON THE GSA SCHEDULE
What Is a GSA Contract Number and Why Does It Matter?
A “GSA number” is shorthand for the contract number GSA assigns when it awards you a Multiple Award Schedule (MAS) contract. When a federal buyer asks whether you have a GSA number, they are asking whether you hold an active MAS contract they can order against. It is not your SAM.gov Unique Entity ID (UEI) or your CAGE code, though people sometimes confuse them.
What does a GSA contract number look like?
Older Schedule contracts used a format such as GS-35F-XXXXX, where the middle characters identified the legacy schedule. Contracts awarded in the consolidated MAS era generally use a number that begins with 47Q. Both types remain usable if the contract is active. Your award document shows the exact number for your contract.
Why do buyers ask for it?
The number points buyers to a vehicle that already has established terms and ordering procedures. With the number, a buyer can find your contract in GSA eLibrary, check your SINs and price list, and place an order or issue a request for quotation according to the FSS ordering procedures. It saves them work, but they still make their own decisions about price reasonableness and best value.
Do you need a GSA number to sell to the government?
No. Agencies buy from companies without MAS contracts through open-market solicitations, other contract vehicles, and subcontracts. A GSA number makes it easier for buyers who want to use the schedule. It does not make you the preferred choice by itself.
What can you do with a GSA contract number?
- Appear in GSA eLibrary and, when your catalog is published, in GSA Advantage
- Receive eBuy requests for quotation tied to your SINs
- Be referenced on orders placed against your contract
- Modify the contract through eMod to add or update offerings
Is a GSA number the same as an IFF or TDR number?
No. Your contract number is the identifier for the contract. Sales are reported against it under Transactional Data Reporting (TDR) through the FAS Sales Reporting Portal, and the Industrial Funding Fee (IFF) is paid through Pay.gov by reference to that contract. See TDR and the Industrial Funding Fee.
How do you get a GSA contract number?
You submit an offer under the MAS solicitation. If GSA awards a contract, it assigns the number. See How to Get on the GSA Schedule.
GSA Contract Number FAQs
Questions about identifiers, marketing, and contract changes.
Using your contract identifier
-
Is a GSA number the same as a CAGE code?
No. A CAGE code identifies your entity in federal systems. The GSA number identifies your contract.
-
Can I use my GSA number when marketing?
Yes, and buyers expect it. Make sure your marketing describes your SINs accurately and does not imply that GSA endorses your company.
-
Does the number change when the contract is extended?
No. Option exercises and modifications generally keep the same contract number.
-
What if I hold more than one MAS contract?
Most companies hold one MAS contract with multiple SINs. If you hold more than one, use the number that matches the SIN the buyer needs.
